Email Is DEAD…

So yes this is a shocking headline, but amazingly enough after googling, (yes that is a word), “Is Email Dead” there were several articles, blogs and even research papers stating both that yes email is dead and no, when used in a certain manner, it is not dead. So why the headline “Email is DEAD”?

Well lately I have been seeing several emails from email marketers stating why email is better than social media. There was a recent tweet by Chris Brogan that stated “Email marketing is the #1 conversion and revenue tool for my business. I have 10x the followers and blog subs, but I get 10x MORE sales via my smallest channel, my newsletter. Email is FAR more responded to than just tweets. He also stated in a tweet…”When people tell me kids don’t read email, first, bullshit. That’s how FB tells them they were tagged in whatever…” Now I am a big fan of Chris. I met him right after he came out with his co authored book ‘Trust Agent’. And I do value what he has to say.

But based on my own research and working with Universities email is changing. There is still a place for it but it is changing. A few stats for supporting the theory that email is changing.

Boston College Will Stop Offering Incoming Freshman Email Accounts

Many students don’t even want a college e-mail address these days because they already have well-established digital identities before they arrive on campus. That’s the conclusion that officials at Boston College came to in a recent review of their online services. So the college recently decided to stop offering full e-mail accounts to incoming students starting next fall.

EDUCAUSE’s annual survey of 930 higher-education institutions showed that about 10 percent of respondents are considering getting rid of student eMail accounts. For doctoral institutions, the number is 25 percent.

So you might ask yourself where are the student’s getting their information? They are still students mobilechecking their current emails like gmail, hotmail and others but on mobile devices. Universities are allowing them to move university emails to one of these services or getting rid of emails all together and creating text messaging for important notices. The point is they are not trying to change their behavior they are trying to reach the students where they are already spending time. This is on platforms like FB, Twitter, Bebo and yes folks, MySpace is coming back. So whether it is a text, a post on one of these platforms or an email account forwarded to another service the message is clear that our email world is changing.

So why are email marketers and others promoting email? Well it is my belief that corporate america changes slowly. I’m not disagreeing with Chris and others that email is still a valid marketing tool, but that the climate is changing. I sat next to a gentleman that works for one of the email providers at a conference not too long ago and this topic came up. His response was that email will always be around, I’m not so sure. But his argument was that once Gen Y get’s into the workforce they will be forced to work on email. Guess what folks…he’s wrong. Gen Y will choose where they work and what they do based on their current behaviors not the behaviors of corporate america. If you don’t believe me ask Readers Digest why they are going bankrupt; well it is because they did not adapt to the new marketplace and the new consumer. Email companies are trying to adapt and change. But I hold to the belief that Email is not Social Media…Period. No matter how loud these companies keep yelling and saying that it is.

I’ve put off writing this blog because I know it will ruffle some feathers but those feathers are due to be ruffled. The bottom line is that behavior’s have changed and corporate america must change with these new behaviors. The status-quo is no more and email is just a small piece of how the new customer, employee and vendor is changing the way they want to be communicated with by companies. Think about how much of your email you don’t read because you consider it spam. Now think about the last few texts, notifications and posts you’ve actually read from platforms you are already on.

Just something to think about…

5 Tips for Networking On LinkedIn

So how do you Network using LinkedIn. With all the resources and tools that are available out there online how do you use them and what are some key things you need to remember when networking with LinkedIn.

First thing to remember is that you are connecting to real people. Well you are supposed to be connecting to real people. Remember the blog LIAR

Just a few things to keep in mind when connecting with someone on LinkedIn. Remember to make sure that they have a profile pic of themselves. If it is a logo or an avatar shy away from those. Also they should have a history of employment and some recommendations from legitimate people about their character or their work. Then  what do you do?

Here are 5 Tips that you can use when networking online through.

  1.  Don’t try to sell anything to someone you are connecting with for the first, third, fifth or twentieth time. Go back and look at Building Trust. Don’t provide a link to your website. (LinkedIn will not allow you to provide a link or phone # to someone you are not connected to.)
  2. Ask for an introduction from someone you already are connected to. You might be surprised to find out that you have a strong connection with someone who is also connected to the person you are looking to meet. (It is always better to have met the person face 2 face that you are asking to make the introduction. )
  3. Be Yourself! People who are your friends or become your friends usually trust you and it usually ends badly when that trust is lost. So be yourself and check out this old blog on Building Trust to Sell Stuff (In this case it is YOU that you are trying to sell,)
  4. Don’t connect with anyone before you know the value you might be able to bring to them or their organization. Remember it’s about “givers gain” Wikipedia describes “givers gain” as the belief that when (business) people set goals to help others and honestly work to achieve these goals, they usually gained the most out of the experience – through a reciprocal benefit.
  5. And Last a tactical way to Network on LinkedIn Use the advanced search on LinkedIn when looking for specific people within companies that you might be trying to get into. The advanced search is pretty user-friendly, but just in case you get confused here is a video for you to view.
This blog was specifically designed as a follow-up for the Corporate Connections Circle of Excellence Educational Moment. But my hope is that it helps all who read, Network a little smarter, connect more often, and get more value from Networking on LinkedIn.

Create Awesome Content!!!

Got your attention? Well this is a very quick, down and dirty blog. Lately I have been inundated with offers claiming to have that magic pill to help me with my Social Media Presence, Strategy, Posts, Content, Marketing and the list goes on. They entice you with headlines like the one for this blog, sorry about that.  Now I could be a real Jerk and name some of the companies and people I am getting offers from, but… I won’t. I learned a long time ago that the only way to win is to be better than the other guy or company who is telling everyone why your company is so bad and how they don’t really have the best of ______________ (fill in the blank).

So What Do You Do? With all these offers and guarantees?

How do you get through all the noise and find the right thing to do to get ahead in whatever business or endeavor you are doing without shelling out a lot of money to the wrong people, companies or offers? Yes I am talking to myself as well. I have paid for bad information, technology and other stuff along the way.

I heard a great line the other day in a movie. “If you want to make a lot of money; Work your Ass Off!” Friends with Benefits As in life so as is in business, there are no short cuts! A friend of mine posted this about someone trying to help businesses out with Social Media. “Liar” by Doug Grady.

The point is simple; work hard, build trust, and be a real person in order to add value to your community. (This Goes For Businesses Too) And yes come back and continue reading these posts and I will help you with all of the above. For just the time it takes you to read this post and if along the way you find value please share this with others.

It is a new world and for all the good, bad and ugly the new currency is TRUST!

Yes folks I have been away but I am back. Hope you tag along on the second part of my continuous journey.

It’s Been Too Long! How is your New Year Starting Socially?

Life is a wonderful teacher….Unfortunately she has a habit of killing all of her students!

So how is everyone doing? I know it has been awhile since the last time I have blogged. I hope you are following me on Twitter or are connected to me another way; Google +, LinkedIn, FB page. I hope that in some way we are connected. If not what are you waiting for?

Well it’s been a crazy beginning to the new year and a lot has happened. Those of you who went with me on my 30 day journey I hope that it added value to your lives and gave you real help in improving your business and reaching your personal goals.

I have been absent in blogging for way too long. Two months. This is one time that it is worth repeating “Do as I say, not as I do!” In order to keep your branding out there you need to continue reaching out to your audience and continue building up trust.

In the next several months I am going to be completing my book and I am asking for your help in keeping me on the right track. I will be putting exerts of the upcoming book on here and I really would like to hear your comments. I will also be adding some valuable advice on social (media) and where it is going and also sharing some thoughts from colleagues and friends about how things are changing with Social and Mobile Engagement.

So for those of you who only follow my blog, my sincere apologies. Please keep connecting with me in other ways as I am more apt to stay in touch with quick posts on a regular basis.

Here’s to living the Life you Were Born To Live! This is my own personal mantra for 2012.

Day 27: Getting Back To My Roots – Digital Presence

So I  train others on how to create an online presence. So why do I only have 237 likes on FB, 329 followers on Twitter and  468 Connections on LinkedIn. Well there are several excuses I could give. The best one is; that I believe in engaging your audience and yes, I truly believe that Size Does Not Matter.

But building an online presence takes work and time. So I am not a big fan of excuses so I’ll just admit that I have not put the time and work into building my online presence.

So part of this 30 day journey is realizing where you need work and what you need to work on. So here are 9 quick tips for Branding yourself or company online fromBob Baker.

  1. Define your brand up front.
  2. Lead with what you do, not who you are.
  3. Use a real person as a figure-head.
  4. Develop a fan-club mentality.
  5. Make good use of words.
  6. Make sure visual elements reinforce your identity.
  7. Become a one-stop destination.
  8. Publish an e-mail newsletter.
  9. Be visible through online forums.
Go to 9 Ways to Create a Rock-Solid Brand Identity Online to go into more detail regarding the above tips.
I still believe that engaging your followers or connections is far more important than having a large following. But there is a lot of noise out there claiming that a “Social Media Consultant” should have a large following. Although I completely disagree with this philosophy and believe engagement and strategy out weigh the size of your following I need to be able to silence the voices from a position of strength.
So if you can help me out by doing one of four things:
  1. Like my FB page
  2. Follow me on twitter @mysylbert
  3. Connect with me on LinkedIn
  4. And if you are on Google + add me to your circles.
If you could help me out I would really appreciate it. After my 30 day journey I will be spending more time on building my own online presence.
So whatever industry or field you are in, go back to your roots and see what you need to work on.

Day 14: Blog, Blog, Blog

So if you are not blogging; why not?

If you have a business you should be blogging about the industry you are in and giving helpful information, that adds value.

What am I talking about? I hear you out there saying, shouldn’t I be selling my company on my blog? Well have you read a blog lately? Most of the good one’s give valuable information without asking for anything, and that is the way it is supposed to be. Yes you can mention your company but only in your bio at the end. Here’s why:

Home Depot was starting to lose sales to Lowe’s. They came up with a great idea. They decided to offer free workshops to the communities where they were and provided these workshops usually on the weekends. Amazingly enough most of the materials that they used in these workshops were also sold by them, but at the end of the workshop there wasn’t a “sales pitch”. They really didn’t care if you went somewhere else to purchase the materials needed. So what do you think happened? Well there sales went up because they became a trusted partner in the community.

That’s the reason. Here’s the how.

You can use a number of different free blogging tools here’s a couple.

WordPress

Blogger

Now there are a number of different free tools out there that tell you how to blog. Click on blog for a great site on “How Blogs Work”.

Your blog should be concise, short (as possible), and informative. But why should you blog and also why should you comment on other blogs.

Influence! When i write this blog it is networked and goes on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. I then post it on Google + and a few LinkedIn groups that I participate in.

If you only blog and post but don’t interact then your missing the point. There have been many ‘Blogs’ written about blogging, but you need to understand that as an individual or business you need to engage with your audience and others and a ‘Blog’ is an easy way to do this.

Social media is about interacting. In order for you to grow your online influence you need to make sure you are initiating dialogue with others. Not just for the sake of selling, but to truly provide helpful, insightful, and inspirational information to others.

Happy Blogging!

Day 12: Live To Learn

So on Day 12 I remembered a concept that I had heard ever since childhood from my Mother who had started a nursing school in Anderson, IN, was a professor at Marshall University (yes the one they made the movie about in Huntington, WV) and then started an Allied Health and Nursing Program at Metropolitan Community College in Omaha, NE. Oh and she went back to school to get her PhD in Adult Education my father also got his Doctor of Divinity degree as well. So the motto was “Live to Learn”.

Both my parents were well into their adult lives and had high school and college age children when they got their Doctorate Degrees. So I come from a family of “continual learners”.

This is why I went back to school to get my MBA in 2008.

Brad Sugar founder of “Action Coach”  stated at one of his events, and I’m paraphrasing, that by reading 1 business book a week, you can become an expert in any business subject you choose and have the same knowledge of most MBA students after a year.

Recently I came across a great blog “Business Insider”   who had an article written by Bianca Male and Aimee Goth that was titled “…21 Books Every Entrepreneur Should Read”  I’d like to add to this list:

“Trust Agent” by Chris Brogan and Julien Smith

“Empowered” by Josh Bernoff and Ted Schadler

“Good to Great” by Jim Collins (also check out his other books)

“4-Hour Work Week” by Timothy Ferris

There are also several programs and courses that you can take online to continue learning in the subject that you are interested in.

If you stop learning you stop expanding your mind and then your imagination.  So go ahead and “Live to Learn”! Whether you work for someone or yourself!

The day we stop learning should be the day we die. In order for you to stay ahead of the rest and live outside of the “Comfort Zone” be sure to continue “Living to  Learn”!

I see baby’s cry, I watch them grow, They’ll learn much more, than I’ll ever know, And I think to myself, what a wonderful world -Louis Armstrong ‘What a Wonderful World’

Social Media Expert?

So is there such a thing as a “Social Media Expert”? Lately I have been seeing a lot about this subject on the group “Social Media Today” on LinkedIn  and Google +. As well as several other blogs. Yesterday I was in a meeting where I was called a “Social Media Expert” several times but I do not consider myself an expert, just someone who has been working with Social Media for over 6 years and understands how to make it work and also I keep my eyes on what’s new and what the new trends are.

I don’t believe anyone can be an expert on Social Media or any industry for that matter unless you keep learning about the industry and the changes that happen within that industry.  When I first started working in Social Media I used to love to ask people who said they knew all about Social Media if they had heard of Second Life and Kaneva. Most said no, so that told me something.

For those of you who don’t know they are virtual worlds that allow individuals to interact in a social way using an avatar and many businesses are using this as well.

Here is what I wanted to say. I have seen many lists and many opinions on what to look for when looking for a Social Media Strategist or so-called “Expert”. I agree whole heartedly with most of these but I have one big question.

How are the people who are deciding what’s on these lists coming up with the information. Yes it needs to work, it needs to be more than how to create a FB (Facebook) page, and it needs to be a part of a holistic strategy. But who is right?

One of the big ones I see all the time is that if you have 1008 followers on Twitter and you follow 1010 people this is a flag that you may not be a social media ex… But I have to ask the question, does having a large following on Twitter make you an expert or does what you communicate to that audience, no matter the size of the audience, matter more?

I have been thinking about this for a while and just wanted to state that just because someone thinks that you have to be a certain way in order to be a Social Media Expert doesn’t mean that you should let them have the last word. You should pick consultants and firms to help you with your Social Media based on your relationship with them, their knowledge of social media overall, their knowledge of integrating it into your current business processes and (here comes a big one) – helps you build trust and affects behavior with the social media strategy and implementation you are, or plan on doing.

See, couldn’t help myself, had to give my own opinion. But keep in mind that this is a young industry and remember that the “Experts” used to state without a doubt in their mind with many measurable results that the “World was Flat”. This was a common and accepted thought for years. So the next time you see a list (and I have some out there) or someone stating how to pick a Social Media Expert just keep in mind that it might be a good idea to think that it is just their opinion.

The World is not Flat it is round but we did not figure that out until one man overcame this old thought which was prevalent in the first half of the 20th century. Not that long ago. So lighten up out there on what you think or don’t think a Social Media Expert is.

How to Pick a Strong Social Media Consultant

So there have been so many people I have met lately who claim to do “Social Media Consulting” that I thought it was a good time to refresh your memory about how to pick a strong Social Media Consultant. So whether you use “Orange SMS Consulting” or someone else you need to make sure you are picking the right one.

Beth Harte and Geoff Livingston wrote a blog  titled “25 Signs You’ve Got a Strong SM Consultant or Agency” So we will be going over these signs this week 5 at a time:

One of the things they say in this blog that is worth repeating on day one is “…Social media communications is still a really new industry, and there are no silver bullet experts or methodologies.” Even today it is still a relatively new industry even 2 years after this blog was written in 2009. These qualifiers are still relevant and if you are missing many of these with your potential partner then you should have a few red flags pop up.

OK, and on we go:

“1. Believes in the generous web and practices cross-linking in their blog.”

This means that they share other practices such as marketing and other web campaigns in their blogs as part of an overall strategy regarding Social Media.

“2. Highlights others’ work in their blog.”

A great example of this is Chris Brogan’s Blog who I quote quite often. I am a strong advocate of his book “Trust Agents”. I met Chris and he is a genuine person and SM advocate.  Another quick thought on this topic is that most true SM Consultants don’t look at others’ as competitors, if they are doing it right, but rather a team effort to make sure SM (Social Media) is being delivered in the right way and with the right value add to the audience.

“3. Integrates social media as part of larger marketing strategies”

This is becoming more important for larger and smaller organizations. It can’t be one or the other it needs to be part of an overall strategy. The original blog uses Razorfish as an example of this.  Most strong SM Consultants have partners that can create larger marketing strategies or help connect SM to an already dynamic marketing strategy that the organization currently has.

“4. Doesn’t pretend to be an expert in all things digital; instead focuses on what he/she/they do best.”

A good example of this is Barbara Giamanco as She incorporates social media for sales.

“5. Gives away best practices in an effort to educate, grow social media in general”

Anyone not providing best practices as part of their blog or conversation is probably not a Strong Social Media Consultant.

This is the first 5 of 25 so come  back tomorrow to see the next 5.

I am not against consultants making a living, and by the way I am one, but make sure you pick the best one for your organization. It is usually the Consultant that you have built a relationship with and Trust!

Social Media Gurus Really Do Exist.

Continuing on with our “5 Lies of Social Media Marketing” from “The Daily Dose” by Mikal E. Belicove.

Number 3: I love this one by the way and all my colleagues and I discuss this quite often.

The answer to the question, Do Social Media Gurus Really Exist is “NO ,they don’t. Here’s my advice when you run across someone positioning himself or herself as a ‘social media guru’ or expert” (Remember an expert is a drip under pressure) “Run for the exit. Everybody working in this field is practicing on the job training. Just because they’ve written a book like I have or spoken in public about the do’s and don’ts of social media, doesn’t mean they know your business and how to conceptualize and manage campaigns that hit upon your business related goals.” Belicove

I love this, absolutely love this. I tell this to people all the time. I personally have been introduced as a social media “guru” and “expert” and I always begin by stating that there is no such thing. This new way to communicate is changing so rapidly that no one can know everything about social media even those of us in the industry. So I agree if someone claims to be an expert run, don’t walk, in the opposite direction.

Today I was at an appointment and we were discussing this topic and although I have said it in the past I need to repeat it here. If a company that has a platform is touting that they know social media (and they may do a great job) at the end of the day they are trying to sell you their platform. There now, I’ve made every technology company who is selling a social media platform mad at me. Happy? The things I do for you!

I totally agree that the company, or so-called guru, does not know your business and social media has to come from within. When I speak to, or work with, companies the goal is to develop an internal team that learns to use social media in a strategic way for the organization. I or one of my consultants acts as a catalyst to build that team around until they can strategically do the process themselves.

There is a methodology we use called POST

P eople

O bjective

S trategy

T echnology

This methodology was created by Forrester Research and can be found in the book “Groundswell” by Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff

You’ll notice that Technology is last and People are first. Only you can decide who your people and objectives organizationally are. We can help you with creating a strategy but you need to implement that strategy consistently from within.

So remember you can’t throw a rock without hitting someone who claims to “do social media”, (wasn’t that way when I first started) but if they claim to be an expert RUN…….Les Adkins – CEO Orange SMS
